The Tenth International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetics, Breeding and Technology is a continuation of a series of symposia beginning in 1967 sponsored by the International Society for Horticultural Science.  This meeting will focus on all aspects of scientific research related to the biology, genetics, cultivar development and horticultural management of plums and prunes.  While early symposia in this series were largely focused on European plums/prunes recent meetings have been more broadly focused on both Japanese and European plums as well and other plum species.  This meeting will be open to research topics related to all plum species.  The meeting will be held on the campus of the University of California, Davis.

All previous meetings of this series have been held in Europe so this will be the first opportunity for attendees at a meeting in this series to observe plum/prune production outside of Europe.  California accounts for more than 90% of fresh market plums and plums/prunes for drying that are produced in the United States.  In addition to seeing plum research and production near Davis during the meeting, attendees will be provided an opportunity to join an optional 2-day tour of the major plum/prune production areas and research facilities in southern San Joaquin Valley which is one of the most concentrated areas of temperate and subtropical fruit production in the world.

Note:  Parts of this meeting will be held in conjunction with a meeting of the International Prune Association (IPA) http://www.ipaprunes.org

On Tuesday, May 22, the ISHS Symposium will have joint sessions and a field trip with members of the IPA.  On Wednesday the IPA will have a business meeting held in the same building but different room as our ISHS symposium.  This collaborative arrangement will allow members of the IPA to become more acquainted with the research of scientists working on plums/prunes and for the ISHS scientists to become familiar with some industry leaders.  The scientific agenda of the joint sessions is being planned entirely by the organizers of the ISHS symposium and members of the IPA will be treated as invited guests to those sessions.

The draft plan for this meeting is as follows:

Registration/Opening Reception: Sunday evening, May 20, 2012
